Like all industries in the 21st century, the aged care sector is under increasing pressure to factor sustainability into its business model and long-term planning.
This includes employee satisfaction and social equity, which are necessary for a thriving, successful business and for achieving sustainable solutions and resident wellbeing.
The intimate connection between environmental and economic considerations is becoming harder to ignore as precious resources dwindle and prices go up.
Population growth is driving up demand for food, water, energy and land, while reliance on fossil fuels and excess waste is becoming increasingly untenable.
Add to that an ageing population, with a quarter of Australians expected to be over 65 in just three decades, increasing demand for residential care facilities.
Key pressures to make these sustainable by minimising water and energy use and waste derive from the need to operate more efficiently and to create a good reputation.
Evidence shows that engaging employees through sustainable programs is fundamental to achieving positive outcomes, through their input into generating ideas and carrying them out.
“An investment in sustainability – people, planet and prosperity – is core to how an organisation can succeed and prosper as a business,” writes sustainable business expert, Dr Kaushik Sridhar.
Energy bills in aged care can be reduced by 80%, according to energy efficiency consultancy Conservia, as well as improving resident comfort and staff productivity, and can even achieve net zero energy use.
Their aged care package involves a multipronged approach included solar panels, submetering, a system to manage the building’s mechanical and electrical equipment, reflective window films, thermal paint for cooler roofs, and voltage optimisation.
Educating staff is also a high priority, to teach them how to use central control systems and change behaviours around opening windows and doors.
Some places, like HammondCare, are also getting creative with recycled materials, harvesting grey water, water-efficient gardens and optimised natural light as part of their Environmental Position Statement that aims to reduce energy and waste.
LED lighting and solar installations are key energy saving tools, which Regis Aged Care is focussing on at 35 of its sites across Australia to reduce their energy bills and environmental footprint.
They estimate these steps alone, involving enough solar panels to cover 33 tennis courts and more than 15,000 lights, could reduce annual energy consumption by up to 20% and greenhouse gas emissions by 3,700 tonnes, the equivalent of taking 1,500 cars off the road.
Importantly, their investment is projected to pay itself off in less than four years.
Warrigal aged care has been making impressive inroads in sustainable strategies for more than ten years through university collaborations, winning them several sustainability awards.
As well as energy efficiency initiatives, they have created a ‘sustainability in the home’ guide for independent living residents. They also recycle clothing and buy Greenfleet carbon offsets.
Committed to finding ways to reduce energy and waste and to apply sustainability design standards to new and upgraded buildings, sustainability manager David Rogers also recognises the importance of developing the right staff culture.
“We acknowledge that this is an ongoing journey and until sustainability is ingrained as a habit in all of our 750 staff, I’m not going to consider it successful,” he told Ageing Agenda.
Joining in the spirit, enterprising residents at Emmaus Village have been teaming up to recycle plastic bottles through Scouts Recycling Centre and have raised funds that go back into organising activities for the residents.
Others are putting on their gardening gloves, which not only reduces the need for food packaging and transport, but also has established benefits for physical and mental health and wellbeing.
Food waste is another pressing environmental and economic issue, especially pertinent to health care facilities. Solutions are also at hand here, such as the Love Food Hate Waste Program.
Anglican Care trialled it and reduced food waste by 6,000 kg per year on average per residential aged care, diverting it from landfill to local farms as mulch and compost – a win-win all round.

Malnutrition is a silent epidemic, often called the “skeleton in the hospital closet” because it tends to escape detection and treatment.
This is surprising given that more than one in three hospitalised older adults and nearly one in thirty community dwelling people over 60 are malnourished. In aged care, malnutrition afflicts up to two thirds of residents.
Longer hospital stays also mean bigger costs and less beds for other patients. In Australia, around 5,400 cases of complications arising from malnutrition each year result in an average 21.3 extra days in hospital, each episode costing up to $44,176 extra. That amounts to nearly $240 million per year.
In the Netherlands and UK, studies have estimated the direct cost of malnutrition in residential aged care as the equivalent of AUS$174 million to $2.76 billion per year.
So, what are facilities investing in older adults’ diets? A 2018 study found that Australian residential aged care spent a mere $6.08 per person each day on food, a drop from the previous year and less than international budgets. In fact, it was shamefully lower than the $8.25 spent on prisoners by Australian corrective services.
Ironically, prioritising good nutrition could result in substantial cost savings for healthcare.
A systematic review of interventions to target malnutrition found they only cost 2.30 British pounds – AUD$4.34 – daily per person to implement and achieved several positive outcomes including improved dietary intake, nutritional status and weight gain.
Other American research found that multi-disciplinary nutrition support for home-based patients at risk for malnutrition drastically reduced hospital admissions and saved millions of dollars in annual health care costs. After 90 days of receiving the program, hospitalisation decreased by 24% in the first month, nearly 23% after two months and 18% after three months. Healthcare costs dropped by US$1,500 per patient over 90 days, amounting to more than US$2.3 million.
Importantly, savings outweighed the costs of implementing the program by sixfold.

Since omega-3 fats were discovered in the 1970s, growing evidence has found they have far-reaching benefits for the body and brain, from fighting heart disease and improving cognition, arthritis and eye health to warding off anxiety and depression.
More recently, studies have revealed these active fats may improve protein metabolism in skeletal muscles, which could have implications for loss of muscle mass and strength with aging.
Skeletal muscle comprises 45% of body mass and is critical for physical function, respiratory and overall metabolic health and recovery from illness or surgery.
Yet muscle mass and strength start waning with age as muscle protein breaks down more quickly than it can be regenerated.
This has been linked, in part, to low-level inflammation that often occurs with aging and is linked to frailty. Chronic inflammation has also been associated with abnormalities of mitochondrial function – the cells’ powerhouse – in aging skeletal muscle.
Combined with inadequate physical activity and poor diet, such declines can lead to sarcopenia, a debilitating condition afflicting one in three older adults, increasing risk of falls and fractures with detrimental impacts on health, activities of daily living and quality of life.
Omega-3s are polyunsaturated fats that form vital parts of all cellular and intracellular membranes where they support cell structure and a host of metabolic activities that impact gene expression and mitochondrial function, among other things.
The most studied omega-3s are the long-chain versions EPA and DHA, which also have properties that reduce inflammation and blood clotting and improve blood flow, accounting for much of their health benefits.
Accordingly, growing research has shown that EPA and DHA positively impact skeletal muscle regeneration, suggesting it can help muscles take up protein. This is likely to vary according to protein intake, which is very important to keep up.
Rich plant sources of omega-3s include nuts and seeds, especially linseeds and walnuts, dark leafy greens, and a succulent plant that grows like a weed in hot, dry areas of Australia called purslane or portulaca.
While these have their own health benefits and can be converted into EPA and DHA by the body, it can be more efficient to consume direct sources of these long-chain omega-3s. That includes algae and deep-sea fatty fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel.
In combination with a healthy diet, fish oil supplements can also boost omega-3 levels, with numerous add-on health benefits.
